Pneumococcal Vaccination Gets Easier

Medicare beneficiaries can now receive pneumococcal vaccines on request in hospitals and skilled-nursing facilities and through home care and hospice agencies.

As of July 1, the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) covers the cost of the vaccine and its administration without a physician's specific order. Claims for the vaccine do not require a unique physician identifier number in item 17A of HCFA form 1500.
