Press Release

ASHP, MedManagement Partner in Membership Agreement

ASHP and McKesson HBOC MedManagement have joined forces to ensure that all of the full-time pharmacy staff at the medication management company are able to take advantage of the latest pharmacy and health care news, cutting-edge educational offerings, and top-notch services available to ASHP members through a group membership agreement.

Beginning in 2001, MedManagement will cover the cost of ASHP membership dues for all of its full-time pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.  Members who are enrolled under this agreement will have full access to ASHP's member benefits, including subscriptions to the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy, progress reports on the Society's lobbying activities in Congress and regulatory agencies, and updates on current practice issues.  ASHP will also work with MedManagement to develop educational resources to meet the needs of pharmacists working in smaller hospitals and in non-acute care health-system pharmacies.

"We are thrilled to be able to partner with MedManagement in this way," said ASHP President Mick L. Hunt, M.S., FASHP.  "This agreement will assist the pharmacists and pharmacy technicians employed by MedManagement by giving them more of the resources they need to maintain the high standard of care they provide to patients."

"With 15 percent of health-systems pharmacies currently externally managed, and this number growing by 18 percent-20 percent each year, the number of pharmacists and technicians working for organizations like MedManagement is growing rapidly.  We believe that through strong ties to organizations like ASHP they can contribute to the evolving professional agenda," said MedManagement's President Lewis P. Zeidner, Ph.D.  "By ensuring ASHP membership for our pharmacists and technicians, MedManagement seeks to reduce barriers to participation in ASHP activities."

ASHP, which has a long history of medication error prevention efforts, believes that the mission of pharmacists is to help people make the best use of medicines.  Assisting pharmacists in fulfilling this mission is ASHP's primary objective.  The Society has extensive publishing and educational programs designed to help members improve their delivery of pharmaceutical care, and it is the national accrediting organization for pharmacy residency and pharmacy technician training programs.
