ASHP Launches Drug Shortages Web Page

Kate Traynor

Information on ways to manage Drug Product Shortages is now available at the ASHP Web site, including Drug Shortage bulletins.

Through an agreement between ASHP and the Drug Information Services (DIS) at the University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics, DIS will research clinically acceptable alternatives that health systems can use as substitutes for drug products in short supply. The findings will be published as “drug shortage bulletins.” Subscribers to the ASHP Drug Shortage RSS feeds will automatically be notified of new bulletins.

“Health-system pharmacists are often the first to be aware of drug shortages and are largely responsible for devising solutions,” said ASHP President Mick L. Hunt, M.S., FASHP. “This new service will provide our members with the information they need to develop strategies that will guide their institutions through difficult situations.”

The resource center is managed by Joseph H. Deffenbaugh, M.P.H., a professional practice associate in ASHP’s Professional and Scientific Affairs Division.
