Outcomes Training Program Gears Up for New Session

Linda R. Harteker

Health-system pharmacists can gain the skills needed to support the clinical, formulary, and administrative decisions made in their institutions by taking advantage of ASHP’s unique training program called the Competitive Edge: Advanced Experiential Training in Conducting and Using Outcomes Studies.

The 2001 offering of the Competitive Edge will be held in Columbus, Ohio, and Seattle, Washington, beginning July 21–25. The three-part course, conducted over four months, gives participants hands-on experience in developing the skills necessary to conduct research that will support pharmacy and therapeutics committee recommendations, develop clinical process tools to offer patient care services, and assist health systems in meeting accreditation standards.

After the July introductory workshop, at which participants learn how to design and implement an outcomes study, participants will conduct a research project in their own health system. Throughout the course, faculty and other students will be available to offer coaching and advice via the Internet. Final results will be presented in December at the Midyear Clinical Meeting in New Orleans.

Application materials and more information on the program are available at the ASHP Web site or from ASHP’s Educational Services Division at 301-657-3000, ext. 1388. The deadline for applications is June 1.
