Apply for ASHP Best Practices Award

Donna Young

Have you or a member of your staff established any of these programs at your health system?
  • Clinical pharmacy service that demonstrates improvement in patient outcomes and reduces treatment cost.
  • Program that improves the medication-use process.
  • Medication-error and adverse-drug-event reporting and monitoring program that reduces medication misadventures.

Then you should consider applying for the Fifth Annual ASHP Best Practices Award in Health-System Pharmacy. (Go to for a list of past award recipients and programs.)

What is this award? It’s a national competition that recognizes innovation and outstanding leadership in health-system pharmacy and is awarded by ASHP, in cooperation with Pfizer Inc.

How are awards chosen? Applicants will be judged on their program or practice description currently used in their health system that meets the following precept: activities that demonstrate leadership in the health-system pharmacy, especially in those areas that significantly improve the quality of patient care.

A maximum of six health systems will be recognized. Applicants must be ASHP members practicing in a health system, such as an acute care hospital, ambulatory care clinic, home health care organization, long-term care facility, or outpatient pharmacy.

Award recipients will receive a plaque and a cash award and present a summary of their program at a poster symposium funded by Pfizer during the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting in December 2003. Travel expenses to the symposium will be reimbursed.

When is the application deadline? Hurry! The deadline for submission this year is Aug. 29. Download a copy of the application (PDF) or wait for the “Call for Submissions” to arrive by mail in June.
