Rabies Vaccine Boxes Missing Vaccine

Cheryl Thompson

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported today that Aventis Pasteur informed the agency a week ago of some packages of rabies vaccine missing the active ingredient.

According to a "Notice to Readers" in Morbidity & Mortality Weekly Report, the company has received reports describing Imovax packages that lack the vial containing the freeze-dried suspension of inactivated rabies virus.

Each package, according to the product's labeling, is supposed to contain one vial of inactivated rabies virus, a disposable needle, and a Luer-Lok syringe with 1 mL of diluent for reconstituting the vaccine. The labeling describes the package as tamperproof.

CDC indicated that, when more information is available, Aventis Pasteur would contact customers.
