ASHP Launches AHFS DI Essentials

Nurses, pharmacists, and other health care professionals, who have learned to depend on the integrity of ASHP drug information resources, now have a more concise drug resource for clinical practice. The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) launched AHFS DI Essentials 2004-2005, a mid-sized reference guide that provides the most authoritative information available in an easy-to-use format, during its Summer Meeting this week in Las Vegas.

AHFS Drug Information (AHFS DI), the well-respected resource from which Essentials has been condensed, is recognized through federal legislation and regulation as an official compendium for information on medically accepted uses of drugs. Essentials distills the most crucial parts of AHFS DI into a lighter reference that provides quick answers at points of care, including nursing stations and satellite pharmacies.

Despite its size—roughly half the number of pages as AHFS DI—Essentials still provides authoritative answers to detailed clinical inquiries and is arranged alphabetically to make locating a drug quick and easy. For each drug included, Essentials provides sections on uses, dosage and administration, cautions, interactions, pharmacokinetics, stability, actions and spectrum, advice to patients, and preparations, each with numerous subsection to facilitate quick answers. An appendix provides helpful clinical tools, including immunization schedules and treatment algorithms for a variety of common diseases and conditions (e.g., hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, asthma, HIV infection, myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, advanced cardiovascular life support).

Essentials also offers unique features not found in other drug references of similar size, such as:

  • Tables that indicate drug interactions and parenteral compatibility;
    Specific dosage information by patient age, disease, route, and special condition (e.g., renal or hepatic impairment);
  • Alphabetical listing of drug interactions;
  • Relevant dosage information at the beginning of each monograph;
  • Separate monographs for systemic, topical, and EENT drug formulations;
  • Separate sections for dilution and IV administration rates; and
  • Identification of product manufacturers.

Essentials is priced at an affordable $99, and ASHP is offering a $20 discount to individuals who order the book before November 30, 2004. For more information about ASHP products and services, or to order Essentials, visit the ASHP Web site at or call Customer Service at (866) 279-0681.
