Pharmacists Integral to National Surgical Infection Prevention Project

ASHP's therapeutic guideline, "Antimicrobial Prophylaxis in Surgery" was a key component in the development of the new guideline published this week by Medicare’s National Surgical Infection Prevention Project.

ASHP was the only non-physician organization represented in this collaborative quality improvement project which is co-sponsored by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and is conducted through the CMS Health Care Quality Improvement Program. Its goal is to reduce the occurrence of post-operative infection by improving the selection and timing of preventative antibiotic administration.

The new guidelines, “Antimicrobial Prophylaxis for Surgery: An Advisory Statement from the National Surgical Infection Prevention Project,” was published in the June 15 issue of the journal, Clinical Infectious Diseases.
