ASHP Seeks Changes to Medicare Part B Demo

A Medicare Part B demonstration project that would recalculate the outpatient payment formula to test reimbursement methods for Part B drugs could negatively impact patient access and quality of care, ASHP told the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance this week. In a statement for the record, ASHP urged the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to work with key stakeholders to rethink and restructure the demonstration project.

ASHP’s statement questions several aspects of the project, including its broad proposed scope and aggressive timeline, and recommends that CMS test the project’s proposed methodology in small, targeted pilot programs. ASHP also cautions that proposed reductions in reimbursement payments could lead to a significant shift of patients from community settings to hospital outpatient departments, resulting in disruption of provider-patient relationships.
