ASHP’s Pharmacy Residency Match Meets Increased Need for Postgraduate Training

Published: April 10, 2019
ASHP Press Release

ASHP’s 2019 Match concluded today, as 5,090 individuals matched with nearly 2,500 pharmacy residency programs across the country. The Match was conducted in two phases to meet the needs of the rapidly growing number of pharmacists and student pharmacists seeking residencies as well as residency programs seeking applicants. Over the last five years, residency positions have increased by 1,473 positions, or 40 percent, nationwide.

“ASHP congratulates the more than 5,000 future pharmacists who matched with PGY1 and PGY2 residencies this year,” said Janet A. Silvester, Pharm.D., M.B.A., FASHP, Vice President, ASHP Accreditation Services Office. “The growth of PGY2 positions has outpaced the growth of PGY1 positions, at 9 percent and 5 percent, respectively. The rise in both applicants and positions demonstrates a clear demand for residency-trained pharmacists as part of a patient’s healthcare team.”

Now in its fourth year, ASHP’s Match Phase II gives applicants who did not match in Phase I a second opportunity to connect with a postgraduate training program. Phase II of this year’s Match resulted in 393 filled positions, in addition to the 4,697 positions filled during Phase I.

Only 37 positions remain to be filled in the 2019 Post-Match Scramble, which will open for applications on April 11 at noon Eastern Time. ASHP recommends that programs make their offers to candidates beginning April 17.
