ASHP Policy Position 8404
DRUG DIVERSION
To encourage each institution to develop its own policy on how to identify, report, and deal with the problem of substance diversion by hospital employees; further,
To recommend that policies relating to substance diversion require reporting of relevant information to the director of pharmacy to permit evaluation by the pharmacy department and if necessary make any appropriate changes to the drug distribution and control system; further,
To request the Council on Clinical Affairs, in due course, to review and revise relevant Statements and Guidelines and Technical Assistance Bulletins to specifically account for the drug-diversion problem.
Rationale
This policy position was developed before preparation of a policy rationale became routine, so no rationale is available.
