Guided mentorship programThe ASHP Guided Mentorship Program is a pilot program designed to connect student pharmacists with seasoned practitioners who can provide advice, guidance, and knowledge related to professional development, post-graduate pursuits, and ongoing career progression through structured one-on-one mentor/mentee relationships.

Program Goals

  • Strengthen the pharmacy workforce by supporting the development of a diverse pipeline of new pharmacy practitioner leaders

Program Benefits

The Guided Mentorship Program aims to serve members in the pharmacy profession who are seeking advice and guidance (Mentees) as well as more experienced practitioners who are looking for opportunities to engage with ASHP and give back to the profession (Mentors). The overall goal is to create mutually beneficial relationships built on trust and respect that foster the professional and personal growth and development of both mentees and mentors.

Program Roles and Expectations

All program participants are expected to:

  • Be committed to the mentorship program and dedicate a minimum of six hours (one hour per month) between October 2021 – March 2022 to engage in one-on-one mentorship activities
  • Develop a strong mentorship relationship built on trust and open communication
  • Be respectful and professional in all communications and interactions
  • Establish clear lines of communications and respond in a timely manner
  • Maintain mutual respect, honesty, confidence, and receptiveness to learning
  • Maintain confidentiality in any personal information shared

Specific Mentee Responsibilities:

  • Identify and communicate the skills, knowledge, and/or goals you want to achieve
  • Take initiative to outline the expectations of the mentorship relationship, including developing and maintaining a meeting schedule and action plan
  • Be open and responsive to new ideas and ways of thinking, feedback, constructive criticism, and coaching from Mentor
  • Listen to Mentor’s feedback and suggestions, evaluate the advice and guidance, and take action

Specific Mentor Responsibilities:

  • Act as confidante, supporter, advocate, and/or guide to Mentee
  • Set a professional tone and ensure a safe and supportive environment
  • Ask questions and engage in active listening with Mentee
  • Challenge Mentee to move beyond their comfort zone and engage in new modes of thinking and/or problem solving
  • Facilitate Mentee’s professional/personal development, goal achievement, and career growth by sharing resources and information, professional networks, personal experiences, and general feedback

Program Interest and Participation

The Guided Mentorship Program is open to ASHP members only. ASHP members interested in participating in the pilot as a mentor or mentee must complete the online application by Sept. 9, 2021. (Please note that participation is limited for the inaugural cohort. Submission of an application does not guarantee selection as a mentor or mentee.) ASHP will use this information to match mentors and mentees in a number of areas, such as professional background, geographic region, or other shared interests. Matched pairs will be contacted by Sept. 30. Formal participation will kick off with a training orientation followed by a series of one-on-one virtual meetings facilitated by the mentee during the dedicated mentorship period from October 2021 – March 2022. ASHP will provide mentoring resources to help guide mentoring pairs throughout the duration of the program.
