March 2021

Hello student pharmacists!

Welcome to the midpoint of the semester! I am certainly looking forward to warmer weather and more sunlight with spring on the horizon. Looking back, I hope your SSHPs enjoyed promoting ASHP’s Practice Advancement Initiative (PAI) 2030 during PAI Week. Students can play a vital role in shaping the future of our profession by raising awareness of PAI 2030 themes and recommendations. If you or your SSHP designed an innovative project or hosted an exciting event during PAI Week, please consider sharing your success story on ASHP Connect or submitting your ideas and resources on the Share Your Advancement Idea for Students page.

Regarding a second ASHP priority, the Pharmacy Student Forum Executive Committee recently met to update the forum’s strategic plan for the 2021-2022 school year. One incorporated change included promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) for student pharmacists and SSHPs as ASHP aims to address racial disparities related to Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. I am thankful for the ASHP DEI Task Force in their efforts to produce sustainable change related to DEI, and I am looking forward to seeing how students will promote this crucial initiative. If you missed it, watch ASHP’s February 2021 Webinar for SSHPs to hear more about the upcoming changes to the ASHP SSHP Recognition regarding this initiative.

As we transition into March, it’s hard to believe that it has been a full year since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Over the past year, we have witnessed COVID-19 cause significant social and economic disruption in addition to drastically affecting health care and the lives of patients. The ongoing pandemic has also resulted in a shift towards virtual classroom instruction, organizational activities, and interviews as well as telehealth communication on patient care rotations. Continuing to remain adaptable during these ever-changing times is a testament to your resilience and dedication to both the profession and our patients.

Since the emergency use authorization of COVID-19 vaccines back in December, we have begun to see a small light at the end of the tunnel for the pandemic. I would like to take a moment to highlight the remarkable work done by student pharmacists across the country in their immunization efforts. From vaccine preparation to administration at clinics, students have been actively involved in every step of the vaccine process. I am incredibly proud of the role you’ve played in serving your communities and combatting this global crisis. More amazing student stories regarding COVID-19 vaccination efforts can be found here .

With a busy season of residency applications and interviews coming to an end for final-year students, take some time to congratulate yourself on all of your achievements thus far. As you finalize your ranking list for what can be an exciting and potentially stressful time, be sure to review the Demystifying Your Match Rank List article and ASHP’s Matching Algorithm video. Regardless of the outcome, your hard work throughout pharmacy school cannot be understated. Additionally, know that ASHP has resources available to you on transitioning to a new practitioner preparing for Phase II of the Match , and beyond.

I am excited to see how we as students continue to positively impact the profession of pharmacy, and I wish you all the best in your professional endeavors during the second half of the semester.
