The Student Leadership Development Workshop is a great way to expose students in your state to leadership opportunities early on in their education. The three-hour workshop is designed to be interactive and fun with the goal of exposing students to contemporary leadership topics in pharmacy practice.
The workshop was developed in 2008 by the members of the Section of Pharmacy Practice Managers in the Leadership Development Advisory Group. The presentation has been given in over 20 states with more than 1,000 participants since its inception. Previously the workshop was included in the student track at ASHP Summer Meetings.
The presentation is broken up into two sections. The first hour is designed to be a didactic presentation given by a facilitator including information on the pharmacy leadership gap, leadership versus management, career opportunities for up and coming pharmacy leaders, practical ways to build your pharmacy leadership skills, and strategies for gaining influence in your pharmacy career. The next two hours allow students to breakout into smaller group sessions. This time is spent covering contemporary leadership cases while students utilize knowledge gained from both their experiences as well as from the previous didactic session. The four major themes covered include: 1) management versus leadership, 2) influencing change, 3) career advancement, and 4) mentoring leaders.
