Expansion of Telehealth Pharmacy Services in the Face of the COVID-19 Pandemic

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ambulatory care clinics have transitioned to telehealth services to allow for continued care of patients, while minimizing possible exposure to COVID-19.  This podcast will explore the implementation and expansion of telehealth pharmacy services in two different ambulatory care clinics in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.  Speakers will discuss the types of telehealth visits provided, the roadblocks encountered, lessons learned, and reimbursement.

SPEAKERS

Kaitlyn BaderDr. Kaitlyn Bader received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from South Dakota State University and completed two years of residency at the University of Minnesota as a Pharmaceutical Care Leadership Resident with an emphasis on leadership, academia and ambulatory care. During her residency, she established a successful comprehensive medication management (CMM) practice at an independent clinic within the Fairview Physician Associates network. While at that clinic, she implemented and led process improvement work focusing on diabetes quality measures. Dr. Bader is currently a Medication Therapy Management (MTM) pharmacist with M Health Fairview. She enjoys being an active member of the interprofessional clinic team and helping patients better understand their medications to achieve their health goals.  Additionally, Dr. Bader is a learning coach for the Alliance for Integrated Medication Management (AIMM) where she supports a variety of health systems within the A3 Collaborative in advancing their CMM programs through a quality improvement framework.

Ashley Marie ParrottAshley Marie Parrott, PharmD, MBA, BCPS, BCACP is the ambulatory clinical pharmacy supervisor for Parkview Health in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Dr. Parrott graduated from the University of Toledo College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. She completed a PGY1 pharmacy practice residency, focused in ambulatory care, at the ProMedica Toledo Hospital Family Medicine Residency. After residency, she served as clinical pharmacist for a family medicine residency where she developed pharmacy-driven transitional care management and Medicare Annual Wellness Visit programs. Most recently at Parkview Health, she is responsible for the oversight of ambulatory clinical pharmacy services including an anticoagulation service, primary care services, and other specialty clinics. Dr. Parrott is also residency program director for Parkview Health’s PGY2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Practice residency. Dr. Parrott has served on ASHP’s Section Advisory Group for Compensation and Practice Sustainability within the Ambulatory Care Practitioners Section for several years, having served as Vice Chair and Chair of the SAG.

Melanie SmithMelanie R. Smith, Pharm.D., BCACP, DPLA is the Director of the ASHP Section of Ambulatory Care Practitioners. In this role, Dr. Smith serves as the staff liaison to the Section of Ambulatory Care Practitioners Executive Committee. She also acts as an ASHP information resource and provides guidance to ASHP members on pharmacy practice in various ambulatory care practice settings.

Previously, Dr. Smith was the Director, Educational Programs within ASHP's Educational Services Division. In this role, she helped coordinate continuing educational programming for ASHP's national meetings. Prior to joining ASHP, Dr. Smith was a Clinical Pharmacist II with United Healthcare as well as a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist with the Roudebush VA Medical Center.

Dr. Smith received her Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of North Carolina and her Doctor of Pharmacy from Virginia Commonwealth University. She completed an ASHP-accredited PGY1 residency at the Lexington VA Medical Center in 2008 and obtained her Board Certification in Ambulatory Care in 2011.
