This podcast episode explores the intersection of clinical pain management and the relatively newer concept of “opioid stewardship” within the context of pharmacy practice. Listeners will receive an overview of institutional pain management and opioid stewardship programs, as well as learn how these conceptual frameworks for healthcare practice compare and contrast.

Erin Himes, PharmD, BCACP is a clinical pharmacy specialist in the Drug Use Management Department covering pediatrics, otolaryngology, and pain management. She received her Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Georgia and completed a PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at Grady Health System. She currently serves on the region’s Controlled Substances Oversight Committee and on the Interregional Controlled Substances Stewardship and Opioid Use Improvement Workgroups. Additionally, Erin is the PGY-2 Ambulatory Care Residency Program Director.
Jordan Wulz, PharmD, MPH, BC-ADM is an assistant professor of pharmacy practice with Concordia University Wisconsin’s School of Pharmacy. Dr. Wulz has a number of teaching responsibilities at CUWSOP including coordinating an Applied Patient Care course in the third year and coordinating the pain management and inflammatory disorders pharmacotherapy units. Additionally, he practices two days a week at an Ascension Wisconsin outpatient pain management specialty clinic.
Melanie R. Smith, PharmD, BCACP, DPLA is a director in the ASHP Office of Member Relations. She serves as an ASHP information resource and provides guidance on pharmacy practice in ambulatory care settings. Dr. Smith received her Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of North Carolina and her Doctor of Pharmacy from Virginia Commonwealth University. She completed an ASHP-accredited PGY1 residency at the Lexington VA Medical Center. She also holds her Board Certification in Ambulatory Care and completed the Pharmacy Leadership Academy through the ASHP Foundation.
