ASHP Policy Position 8204

STATEMENT ON THE HOSPITAL PHARMACIST AND DRUG INFORMATION SERVICES (Discontinued)

Status: Discontinued

To cease distribution of the ASHP Statement on the Hospital Pharmacist and Drug Information Services.

Note: The provision of drug information services as an integral part of institutional pharmacy practice is stated in Standard IV of the ASHP Minimum Standard for Pharmacies in Institutions, thus eliminating need for the above statement.

Rationale

This policy position was developed before preparation of a policy rationale became routine, so no rationale is available.

Background

This Statement, prepared in 1967, was reviewed by the Council. It was concluded that its original purpose--to identify and support pharmacy's leading role in hospital drug information centers--no longer exists. It also was believed that the Statement, as such, was antiquated and should not be distributed any longer. However, the Council believed ASHP should have a Statement indicating that drug information services are an integral part of pharmacy practice. Standard IV of the ASHP Minimum Standard for Pharmacies in Institutions fulfills this requirement.
