SPE Chair's Message June 2023

James A. Trovato, PharmD, MBA, FASHP

June 2023

Dear Colleagues,

As I conclude my term as Chair of the ASHP Section of Pharmacy Educators (SPE) I would like to share with you the major accomplishments of our section over the past year. Each and every one of these projects has been the work and efforts of our Executive Committee, Advisory Group leaders, members, and volunteers dedicated to contributing to the Section.

First, I want to highlight the Section’s first ASHP Statement on Precepting as a Professional Obligation. This statement was recently approved in the June 2023 Session of the ASHP House of Delegates, marking an impressive milestone for our Section.

Continuing our efforts to advance practice and support innovation for pharmacy education, the Section has worked to better understand the needs of experiential educators and ways by which our Section can continue to support practice-based learning. Additionally, following the publication of the Section’s Crystal Ball project exploring trends in pharmacy education, the SPE will present a continuing education session entitled “The Crystal Ball Project: Insight and recommendations for improving the future of pharmacy education and workforce” at the 2023 Midyear Clinical Meeting & Exhibition in Anaheim, California.

The Section has also maintained our commitment to key ASHP priorities, including Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and Well-Being and Resilience for the pharmacy workforce (WBR). The SPE published a DEI guide for projects and programs pertinent to all ASHP staff, volunteers, and the broader profession, encouraging content authors to be more inclusive. We also conducted focus groups to explore the well-being challenges for pharmacy residents, and hope to publish our learnings soon.

Our Section Advisory Groups continued their great work this year, producing ample resource documents that continue to support preceptors, faculty, and all those involved in the education of the pharmacy workforce. ASHP has built a library of case studies and examples of practice advancement and innovation in pharmacy education through adoption of PAI 2030 principles and recommendations. We continue to update the ASHP Preceptor Toolkit, adding rotation resources such as the IPPE Guide for Rotation Activities to address EPA requirements. The SPE has also built and maintained the ASHP Careers in Health System Pharmacy Toolkit in partnership with the Section of Clinical Specialists and Scientists.

In addition to toolkits, webpages, and resource documents, the SPE continues to provide regular podcasts and CE webinars for topics of interest. A few our outlined below, and more can be found on ASHP’s Educator Essentials podcast channel or eLearning platform (hint: filter for “preceptors”).

Select CE webinars:

  • Exploring the Pass-Fail Grading Model in Pharmacy Education
  • Precepting Generation Z
  • Best Solutions: A How-To Guide for RPD Survival
  • Criteria-Based Feedback For Residents: Review of Standard 3.4c
  • An RPD Guide to the New Pharmacy Residency Standards
  • Professional Identity Formation Starter Kit for Preceptors: What Is It and What Do I Need to Know?

As Chair, I’m frequently asked about how to get involved with the SPE. A great way to become or stay involved in the Section of Pharmacy Educators is to participate in one of our Section Advisory Groups. I encourage you to apply here. Applications will open February 1 and will close May 1 for this one-year appointment.

We look forward to continuing to support you in 2023, and beyond. In the meantime, if you have any questions, would like to share information, or would like to learn more about how to contribute to our section, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Kindest Regards,

James A. Trovato, Pharm.D., M.B.A., FASHP
