Reason for the Shortage

    • Baxter has 0.9% sodium chloride small volume bags on back order due to increased demand.
    • BBraun has 0.9% sodium chloride small volume bags available.
    • BD has 0.9% sodium chloride small volume bags available.
    • Fresenius Kabi did not provide a reason for the shortage.
    • ICU Medical states the shortage is due to increased demand. The 50 mL and 100 mL VisIV bags have been discontinued.
    • Pfizer has 0.9% sodium chloride small volume presentations available.

Estimated Resupply Dates

    • Baxter has 0.9% sodium chloride 100 mL minibags in single packs and quad packs in limited supply and being allocated. All other presentations are available and being allocated.
    • Fresenius Kabi has 0.9% sodium chloride 50 mL PVC/DEHP-free bags on back order and the company estimates a release date in mid-December 2021. The 100 mL PVC/DEHP-free bags are on back order and the company estimates a release date in late-January 2022.
    • ICU Medical has 0.9% sodium chloride 50 mL bags in 80 count, 100 mL bags in 80 count, and 50 mL preservative-free bags available to contracted customers only. The 100 mL bags in 48 count are on allocation to contracted customers. The 25 mL bags are on allocation.

Alternative Agents & Management

    • Reserve small volume bags for medication preparation. Use larger volumes (1 liter) for all other uses including starting intravenous lines, administering blood, or flushing.
    • Work with materials management departments to transfer supplies of small volume bags to pharmacy.
    • Review current compounding and switch to IV push or premixed products whenever possible.
