Paolo's Story

Dr. Valerio received his Pharm.D. from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia on April 2016. Currently, Dr. Valerio is a PGY-2 Health System Pharmacy Administration Residency at Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Dr. Valerio currently serves on the Clinical Applications Section Advisory Group.

Facility/Health System

Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) is a teaching hospital licensed for 576 beds with approximately 800 physicians and 5,000 staff members. AGH is one of the 7 hospitals under the Allegheny Health Network that serves Western Pennsylvania. The institution is a leader in cancer, cardiovascular, neuroscience, orthopaedic, and rehabilitation care. AGH is focused on serving their community, becoming a research innovator, and promoting lifelong learning and teaching.

Significant Projects

Vasopressin as part of health system cost savings initiative - at its current state, the project focuses on the financial and operational analysis. For future aims, the project is aimed to reduce vasopressin waste, identifying an operational improvement waste, implementing the intervention, and reviewing the impact on the institution.

Measuring the impact on standardizing IV antibiotic stock in the ICUs - at its current state, develop a process justification by placing certain antibiotics as floor stock. The project reviews operational efficiencies as well as achieved clinical metrics (i.e. Sepsis Core Measures).

Advice for Someone New to Your Specialty Area

“I recommend to be courageous and step out of your comfort zone when participating in task forces and projects. Engage other residents/practitioners in other areas to understand how other health systems approach similar complex problems that affect their institution (ex. drug shortages).”

Initial Involvement in ASHP

“My interests stem from expanding my operational understanding and approaching complex problems through innovative approaches. I became involved in ASHP to leverage the network between various institutions and practitioners to tackle challenges commonly seen in our profession.”
