Thomas Johnson

Credentials: Pharm.D., BCPS, MBA, FASHP
Position/Title: Professor / Clinical Specialist
Organization: South Dakota State Univ. / Avera McKennan Hospital
Primary Specialty: Critical Care

Education/Advanced Training

I received my Pharm.D. from North Dakota State University and completed a pharmacy practice residency at St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck, ND. I have also recently completed my MBA with Healthcare emphasis at the University of Sioux Falls.

Type of Patient Population Served

I work in a mixed medical/surgical adult intensive care unit. That means that on any given day, I will see patients with head trauma, significant infections, severe COPD, severe congestive heart failure, or medication overdose - just to name a few.

Roles and Responsibilities

I serve as the PGY2 Critical Care Residency Director, which involves overseeing the activities of the specialty residents that work in our critical care services. I also serve as a Critical Care Pharmacy Specialist and work to improve the care of the patients in the adult ICU. I am a Professor of Pharmacy Practice for South Dakota State University, so I work with students on rotation and teach in the classroom as well.

How I Got Where I am Today

I work hard to do the very best I can do every day. I have never had a specific plan or very specific career goals, but I take a lot of pride in the work that I do and the programs that we have developed.

Advice for Students Pursuing this Career Path

Work hard to get through at least a PGY2 residency program. The mentorship and guidance you will receive in these two years are very hard (if not impossible) to replace.

Professional Organizations/Activities Outside Day-to-Day Job Responsibilities

I have served ASHP in a variety of roles including two councils, two other committees, and serving as a delegate to the ASHP House of Delegates. I am now Board Member-Elect for the ASHP Board of Directors. I have also served as the President of our state Society (SDSHP), and as the President and Treasurer of our local district of our state Association (SDPhA). I am an active member of SCCM and serve on the Accreditation and Online Learning Committee for that organization. I am also a member of ACCP, ASPEN, and AACP.
