Acute agitation, particularly in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, occurs frequently, resulting in multiple visits to the emergency department each year. The management of acute agitation occurs in various departments throughout the hospital and health system. This educational activity will discuss currently recommended patient-centered approaches to care, which includes both nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic treatments. Guideline-recommended approaches that improve the patient experience as well as improve future interactions between patients and healthcare professionals will also be discussed.
SPEAKERS
Rohini (Mona) Downs, PharmD, BCPP, (she/her) has practiced as a Clinical Psychiatric Pharmacist for 11 years and has a passion for patient education, treating substance use disorders, and serious mental illness. She is involved in interdisciplinary resident and student teaching and multiple hospital initiatives to expand mental health access to patients with mental illness. She greatly enjoys her work, but also loves to unwind at home with her husband, 3 children, extended family, and friends, travelling, reading, and listening to true crime podcasts.
Koth Cassavaugh, PharmD, (he/him) is the Director of Pharmacy at Auburn Community Hospital, a 99-bed acute care hospital in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree and Doctor of Pharmacy from Albany College of Pharmacy in Albany, NY. Dr. Cassavaugh has served as the Chair for Premier’s Clinical Pharmacy Practice Council. He is also a consultant to Genixus and Speaker for Bioxcel. Very active in research, presentations, publications, and teaching, Dr. Cassavaugh also works with industry and pharmacy managed focused committees. He has held management positions for 19 years in both small and large hospitals.
