A Closer Look into the ASHP Innovation Center

The inaugural episode, A Closer Look into the ASHP Innovation Center, features insights from ASHP Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice President Kasey Thompson, Sophia Chhay, assistant director of the ASHP Innovation Center, and Vicki Basalyga, director of ASHP's Section of Clinical Specialists and Scientists, who discuss the genesis of the ASHP Innovation Center, focus areas and goals, and how you can get involved.


Kasey ThompsonKasey K. Thompson,  Pharm.D.,  M.S., M.B.A., is Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice President at the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) in Bethesda, Maryland.   

Dr. Thompson has published numerous articles on medication-use safety and health policy, and is co-editor of the 2005 book: Medication Safety: A Guide for Health Care Facilities.  Dr. Thompson has given presentations nationally and internationally; has testified  before the United  States Senate, U.S. House of Representatives,  and before a variety of federal agencies;  and has served on numerous advisory committees  and governing boards for various public and private sector organizations.

Dr. Thompson holds a Bachelor of Science degree in cellular biology from Northeastern Oklahoma State University; and Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees from the University of Oklahoma, College of Pharmacy.  He also holds an M.S. in Information Technology and an M.B.A. from the University of Maryland University College.

Sophia ChhaySophia R. Chhay, Pharm.D., is the Assistant Director of the ASHP Innovation Center. In this role, Sophia helps lead and manage efforts to implement new programs, and identify new partnerships and collaboration opportunities that support and advance ASHP’s mission and vision. She also provides leadership and management support for strategic planning, external stakeholder engagement, business and program development, executive communications, and operations for the Office of the Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice President. 

Sophia received her Pharm.D. from the University of Findlay College of Pharmacy in Ohio before completing a PGY-1 pharmacy residency at the Erie VA Medical Center in Pennsylvania. Prior to joining ASHP as staff, Dr. Chhay was the 2017-2018 ASHP Executive Fellow in Association Leadership and Management. During her year-long fellowship, Dr. Chhay received hands on training in all facets of not-for-profit association management and direct mentorship from ASHP’s Senior Leadership.

She also currently serves as the program coordinator for the ASHP Executive Fellowship in Association Leadership and Management.

Vicki BasalygaVicki Basalyga, Pharm.D., BCPS, BCPPS, is the Director for the Section of Clinical Specialists and Scientists. In this role Vicki serves as an information resource and provides guidance to ASHP members regarding science and scientific developments affecting pharmacy practice in health systems. She serves as secretary to the Section executive committee and coordinates activities to accomplish the objectives established by the Section. Additionally, Vicki has assumed the position of Council Secretary for the ASHP's Council on Therapeutics.

Vicki received her Doctor of Pharmacy from Duquesne University and completed an ASHP accredited PGY1 at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. Vicki is also a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist and a Board Certified Pediatric Pharmacotherapy Specialist.

Prior to her current position at ASHP, Vicki practiced as critical care pharmacist in both the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. Other activities Vicki performed included drafting policies and procedures, co-chairing the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program, creating and drafting order sets for CPOE conversion and precepting residents and students.
